The 3 Great Motivators, A Buggy Summer, and Dads
Something I learned
This week I learned about the 3 great motivators: Fear/Reward, Duty, and Love.
I was reflecting on my personal performance and realized that I’m always motivated by these three things.
Sometimes I’m motivated by the fear of what I’ll lose if I don’t keep going, other times I’m motivated by a prize at the end of the journey.
Other times I’m motivated by duty, telling myself, “I owe it to myself to finish” or “I owe it to my team to keep pushing through this hard thing.”
And occasionally I’m motivated by love, which is the greatest motivator of all. Being motivated by love is (in my opinion) the highest form of discipline. When I’m motivated by love, I don’t worry about the cost of failure. I don’t think about the temporal reward I’ll get when I’m done. I don’t even think about doing it as a responsibility. I do it because I simply love to do it.
For example, I love to feel my body get stronger at the gym (even though I don’t love the pain). I love when I master a new skill. I love to make someone else smile.
Question for you: What is something that you have to do, and what kind of motivation will help you accomplish it to the best of your ability?
Something I did
I recently completed the hardest 3.5 months of my entire life.
I’m a door-to-door sales manager for Fox Marketing and have been in Midland, TX since late April.
Basically, my job is to go door-to-door and talk to strangers, sign them up for quarterly pest control, and help my team to do the same.
This is my 5th year doing it, and you’d think it would get easier and easier as time goes on.
What I’ve found is that each year brings its own set of challenges that push me in different ways. This year was no exception.
Here are my major takeaways from this summer:
- My wife and I can do hard things
- I can make a little go a long way if I need to
- God is in the details of our lives
I’m very happy to be going home to Utah 😆
Something I used
If you know me, you know that I use the Notion app for pretty much everything in my life 😂
I made an “Apartment Cleanup” page and shared it with my team to help us get ready to move out.
Here’s what it looks like:
Something I laughed at
One of my teammates accidentally called me “Dad”.
Not sure if I should be worried or take it as a compliment 🤔
