The way you define success will determine how often you're happy.

If success for you is defined by reaching a goal down the road, then you won't feel successful until you've achieved that goal. Your satisfaction is now determined on whether you hit that goal or not down the road.

An idea that I've adopted recently is measuring my success by what I'm doing right now.

I'll give you my list as an example 👇

I'm being successful when:

  • I'm having fun
  • I'm recognizing how much I've improved
  • I'm inspiring and empowering others to lead more fulfilling lives
  • I'm trying to solve problems I care about
  • I'm sticking to a commitment, even though it might be hard at the time
  • I'm doing something for someone they can't do for themselves
  • I'm recognizing God's hand in my life
  • I'm making my wife feel loved, safe, and happy
  • I'm providing for the life my wife and I want for our family
  • I'm asking for help and making adjustments

Defining success this way will help you find fulfillment on your journey to reaching your goals, not just when you reach them.

This creates a motivational cycle; the more you feel success, the more you'll want to keep pushing towards the goal.

Now that I think about it, defining success this way may just be the only way to truly succeed...
