Refusing charity

I went to Sportsman's Warehouse today and got some new boots.

At the checkout, before I swiped my card, the cashier asked if I would like to donate to a charity I've never heard before that would benefit kids with cancer.

I thought about for a second.... and I said "no".

It felt weird saying "no", but it also felt a little weird that the option to donate money to a charity I'm totally unfamiliar with came out of nowhere with very little time to respond.

Does that make me a bad person? Should I have donated money anyways, even though I don't trust, let alone even heard of, the organization?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all against donating to charity. In fact, I donate to good causes I trust on a regular basis.

I'm just a little cautious about giving money to organizations I'm not familiar with.
