Something I Learned

I sat down with a top leader in my company to ask him about how he sets, keeps, and reaches his goals.

This guy (I’ll call him Dave) has averaged over $1M in income over the past several years.

Dave said that the most important thing you can do to ensure that you’ll reach your goals is get clarity. The reason only 1/1000 people reach the goals they set, according to him, is that they don’t know what they really want.

If you can be clear on what you want, you are much more likely to get it (well duh, of course you have to know what you want! Stay with me here…)

Most people have goals for the next year, 6 months, quarter, or even for the next week. BUT, and this is the key here, most people allow their focus to be spread over too many things demanding their attention.

Even if I only have one major goal for the next year, I won’t reach it if my attention is divided up by too many things that I “want”, but are not related to my one major goal.

To help with this, he had me do what’s called The Clarity Exercise.

Here’s how it goes:

  1. Write down 100 things that you want (this can get difficult after about 50, you have to get really creative).
  2. Narrow down that list to your top 10.
  3. Narrow that list down to your top 3 (if you could get these things in the next 12 months, it would be the best year of your life).

Here’s the magic of The Clarity Exercise: Not only have you narrowed down exactly what you want, but you’ve also just made a list of all the things you will say “no” to if they get in the way of your main goal.

With your top 3, make a plan for how you’ll reach those three and break up those goals into weekly and daily habits or tasks.

For me, the exercise took a total of about 1.5 hours. Although it’s a little bit of a time commitment, it will pay off in the long run.

Something I Did

This past week was my 26th birthday (September 29th if any of you are wondering)!

Happy Birthday to me!

The first part of my day was spent at the gym where I did the most volume in a deadlift set I think I've ever done: 320lbs for 10 reps. I walked out with a sore back and a smile on my face :)

I went to my Systems Programming class where I learned how your computer is able to start and stop multiple applications at once using what are called "signals".

After my work meeting at 1:00, I went home and changed into some more casual clothes. Here's where the fun begins...

My wife booked us a couples massage at a massage school here in Provo, UT. Perfect timing for my sore back!

After that, we went to one of the best Indian restaurants in town, India Palace. I still can't stop thinking about that Chicken Coconut Korma 🤤

What came next took me by total surprise.

My wife booked us tickets for a Full Moon Lift Ride at Sundance Resort. I've been up ski lifts hundreds of times during the ski season, but that was in the middle of the day! Going hours after the sun had gone down was a totally different experience!

From Sundance's Website

It was a perfectly clear night and the moon was as full as it could be. We went up quietly to one of the mountain's peaks for about 25 minutes, taking in the mountain's nightly sounds.

When we got to the top, we could see silhouettes of all the surrounding mountain ranges. It was like we were on a different planet!

If you're ever in Utah in the fall and it's the end of the month, I highly recommend the experience.

Something I Used

I think it's time I highlight one of my favorite pieces of technology I use on a daily basis:

The Keychron K2 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard.

It is a wireless keyboard, I just choose to use the cord :)

I love using this keyboard whenever I'm at my home desk.

It's tactile.

It's simple.

It has cool LED lights.

And it's SO fun to use!
