Buy-in, Luscious Locks, and Tacos
Something I learned
This week I learned about the power of “buy-in”.
Not the kind of buy-in at a poker game, but the kind where you invest yourself emotionally to a cause greater than yourself.
I am a sales manager for a door-to-door team that sells pest control in Midland, Texas (if you don’t know where that is, I don’t blame you), the land of pumpjacks, tumbleweed, and a crazy amount of bugs! I’m also convinced it’s the one spot on planet Earth where you are closest to the sun 🥵.
The past few weeks we’ve competed to see which office in the entire company can sell the most accounts per rep on average.
After making it all the way to the final, I still wasn’t sure we could win. I kept telling myself, “It’d be cool, but I won’t be mad if we lose. It’s just a competition.” Luckily, other great leaders on the team were ready to do whatever it took to win the competition! Our group chat was constantly going off with cheers for every sale we got on the board and uplifting messages throughout the entire match to the point where every single person was invested in winning.
This buy-in helped me work harder than I would have before, but not for myself. For the team.
Everyone felt it and, by the end of the day, we performed the best we ever had in the past and won the championship, going against one of the best teams in the country!
A few takeaways:
- Buy-in starts with the leader (that doesn’t always mean they need a title)
- Buy-in pushes you to work harder and smarter than before, not for yourself, but for a common goal
- Consistent positivity and absence of negativity are crucial to success
Something I did
I had my friend Dylan give me a haircut.
I’ve been trying to grow it for about 2 months, hoping it would turn into a red sea of luscious locks.
Alas, my hair turned out to be too “poofy”, so I returned to a crew cut.
Dylan cuts his own hair and has been helping out the other guys in the apartment. He’s such a stud.
Something I used
My friend recently convinced me to sign up for YouTube Premium (fancy).
It has no ads and you can download videos to watch later offline.
I’m officially hooked and never going back.
Something I laughed at
